Port Hedland what can I say to me just another biggish town. Has some old buildings etc. It is the port for Newman Ming where they export their iron ore. Regularly gets hit by cyclones in the wet season. Take a look anyway.

On your way back to Perth stop at Meekatharra, Cue ask for directions to visit Big Bell an old ghost gold mining town. Stop at Mount Magnet all have their own history to see. I hope you enjoyed the tour. The next Page 16 is a diversion from Port Hedland to Broome and Derby if you want to go that way before heading south.

Marble Bar its claim to fame the hotest town in the world 43C + for 137 Days straight. Origionally settled to mine marble which turned out to be red jasper. Then they found gold. Stop off take a look well worth it. Have a beer at the Iron Clad Pub. If you are interested head out of town 30km odd on a dirt road and go to Korunna Downs Station and check out the old World War 2 air base there. Always check with the station owner before you go sight seeing some can be funny and you might get greeted with a shot gun.

Newman iron ore mining town I spent 5 years here in the 1980's working for a air-conditioning contractor. Go see the mine site on one of their tours fascinating. About 40km east is the largest know iron ore deposit in the world McAmies Monster. I believe it is being mined now. There are many worth while spots off the beaton track to go see here but remember never just go. Always let someone know where you are going, how long you expect to be away and the route you intend to take never veer from it. Take plenty of water with you no taps out there. Try to carry a GPS and some form of communications with you so if you strike trouble (breakdown get bogged etc.) you have a chance of letting someone know. If you do not have any friends to notify before you go tell the police.
